Born in Fort William, it was not long before this exceptional hockey player, known by many as "Blackie" was making a name for himself in the minor leagues of the Lakehead. A tireless skater and effective back-checker, his junior days were spent as a forward with the Port Arthur Flyers during the mid 1940s before advancing to the Oakland Oaks of the Pacific Coast League for the 1946-47 season.

Signing his first pro contract with the St. Louis Flyers of the AHL, he joined fellow Fort William players Johnny Raynak and Pop Backor to form the powerful "Kid Line". In his second season with the Flyers, they claimed the Western Division Championship title and Steve's outstanding skating and scoring abilities soon caught the eye of another fellow Fort William product, Jack Adams of the Detroit Red Wings.

Acquired by the Detroit Club for the 1949-50 season, his rookie year in the National Hockey League proved to be a successful one. Scoring seven goals and assisting on 14 others, he participated in 13 playoff games as the Red Wings defeated the New York Rangers to claim the Stanley Cup.

Following a trade to the Chicago Black Hawks, Steve returned to the AHL with Indianapolis and St. Louis before joining the Calgary Stampeders of the Western Hockey League in 1952. Although plagued by injuries, his scoring abilities and aggressive style contributed to the Stampeders WHL League winning season of 1953-54.

Returning to Fort William, Steve continued to stay involved in the game of hockey as both a player with the Fort William Senior Beavers, the Lakehead Pro All-Stars and Thunder Bay Oldtimers. He passed along his knowledge to many young players from Thunder Bay, serving as a coach of bantam and midget teams and with the Fort William Junior Hurricanes during the 1960s, marking four decades of involvement in the game of hockey.
