Biography

This Port Arthur athlete was a stand out during the 1920s and 30s earning success in track and field at the local, district, provincial, and national levels. Wally developed much of his outstanding talent while at student at Port Arthur Technical School.

At the local level he was a three-time winner of the Port Arthur Jubilee Cup for the 3 Mile Junior Road Race from 1929-31. Not surprisingly he was sent to represent Port Arthur at Ontario high school track and field meets across the province from 1929-33. In his first provincial competition held in Kingston in 1929 he returned home with the gold medal for the Junior Half Mile Event, and added another provincial gold medal to his collection when he won the Half Mile title in 1931 as well.

Wally’s first introduction to competition at the national level came at the 1931 Dominion Track and Field Meet where he earned and impressive third-place finish in the Open Half Mile Event.

The 1933 Dominion Track and Field Meet was held at McKellar Park in Fort William and it was here that Wally once again proved his outstanding athletic abilities. In the Half Mile event he led the field for the first lap, dropped to fourth place half way through the distance and staged a great finishing drive to claim the title. In the Mile event he duplicated his feat, holding back until the final two hundred yards and making another gallant finish to the delight of the hometown crowd.

Retiring from active competition in 1935 Wally went on to serve the sport of track and field as a coach and official.

Inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame, September 26th, 1992
